Name: Kurosaki Isshin
Fandom: Bleach
History link: Not much is known about Isshin before ‘Bleach’ begins, other than he married Masaki (Ichigo’s mother), had a son and twin daughters. Nine years after Ichigo was born, his wife Masaki was killed. And although Isshin played along like he had no idea what had happened to his wife, he knew. He even knew the identity of the hollow that had killed her. But there was nothing he could have done to help her, or his son. At that time
He had never felt any grudge against the Hollow and he certainly did not blame his son for what happened. If he had to blame anyone, Isshin blamed himself for not being able to help her. But he and his family moved on, making the best of their new mother-and-wife-less lives.
It was a pretty normal life for a while. Ichigo, Karin and Yuzu were all human, growing up quite healthily, Isshin doing the best job he could as a father to embarrass the living hell out of his kids while pretending to be a normal human being.
And then it all changed. One night, a Hollow burst into their happy (if somewhat dysfunctional) home and nearly killed them all. Isshin was still powerless and unable to help his family as the Hollow known as Fishbone D tore apart his house and attacked his daughters. As he lie outside of his body, Isshin couldn’t help but notice the rise in spiritual pressure as a shinigami attempted to fight the Hollow. And then the explosion of spiritual power as something happened, something dramatic and involving Ichigo. It was at that point that he knew what had happened. His son had become a shinigami.
From then on, although Ichigo didn’t seem to realize it, Isshin was sneakily helping him and preparing himself for battle. He regained his powers (although to what extent it isn’t known) and prepares a talisman for Ichigo’s body to keep it safe before he goes to Soul Society. It’s a very powerful talisman, enough to keep Kon (in Ichigo’s body) safe from an imperfect Arrancar. He also helped Ichigo by letting Rukia stay with them, so that he will be able to train/do his job as a ‘substitute’ shinigami that much more easily.
Age: Appears to be in his late 30s, but with recent… ish developments, it throws his age into question. Isshin is seen to be a shinigami captain (although of what division no one is sure), so that brings his real age into question. He could be any age from 30 to 2,000 years old. Since it hasn’t been said in canon, I hope to avoid this question as much as possible. Though he is, obviously, more than 18 years old at the time in canon. Haha. After all, how the hell would he have fathered Ichigo when he was three? Yes, Isshin’s a manly man, but not quite THAT manly.
Canon point: I will be taking Isshin from when he’s in the underground training area with Ishida Ryuuken after their sons leave for Hueco Mundo. (So he’ll be in is spiritual body, and not his fake body.)
Personality: Isshin Kurosaki is most often an energetic, happy-go-lucky type of man. Very little seems to get him down. Usually, if he is upset, he finds that a quick wail and a rapid retreat to his dead wife's memorial poster can set things right. He is a loving father to his son and twin daughters, although they often seem annoyed with him, perhaps because his way of expressing love (with his eldest child and only son) is with a quick punch to the head, or with an estatic invitation for his daughters to cry into his (manly!) chest
Isshin can be serious, though he isn't often. Usually when he is it's because of something that deeply disturbs him or the situation absolutely requires him to be sombre. Even then, he can and often does act like his normal, enthusiastic self, often destroying a sober moment with an amusing face or overly dramatic gesture.
He can also be very crafty. Isshin knows that Ichigo is a Shinigami, although he doesn’t let on to anyone that he knows. He has been able to hide that he’s a shinigami from his family, and even from the various shinigami that Ichigo parades through his house, even though he is managing to regain his powers.
He’s quite intelligent as well, though he acts like a complete doofus most of the time. He is, after all, a doctor, although it isn’t known whether or not he’s actually legally licensed to practice medicine, or if he’s faked the documentation. Even if he’s faking it, he’s doing a pretty darn good job at doctoring.
He’s also a very progressive man, openly talking about his son’s ‘mating season’ to his daughters (who insist it is called puberty) although at times he can be quite traditional. For example, he insists on wearing a yukata (cotton summer kimono) to watch the summer fireworks. Also, he follows his own tradition of smoking just one cigarette a year, on the anniversary of his wife’s death. Though, unlike most shinigami, it seems that he’s not too conservative. It may be because he spent so much time (at least twenty years) among the humans, although it’s more likely that he was like that before he left his position as a Captain. It might have even be one of the reasons that he left Soul Society (where the Shinigami live)
Powers/Abilities: For the majority of his appearances in the manga/anime, we’re lead to believe that Isshin has no real powers. Well, aside from being highly skilled at hand-to-hand (Or foot to head…) combat, and an astonishing endurance (he’s seen taking a shotgun blast to the face at one point). Isshin also possesses a very keen intellect. He has repeatedly shown an ability to see the truth in any situation set before him, such as how he immediately realized that Kon was not Ichigo, and how he already knew about the situation with Aizen and the Arrancar when Urahara Kisuke spoke to him about it.
When he’s out of his gigai, he appears to be a former shinigami captain, presumably with all the powers that a shinigami captain usually has. He’s shown to be quite excellent at Kidou (the shinigami version of magic), when he creates a charm to protect Ichigo’s body. He also has a very powerful reiatsu when he’s out of his gigai, enough to make Ichigo pause from his fight with Shinji Hirako. He’s incredibly strong, capable of amazing feats of strength, such as when he flipped Aizen the bird and sent him crashing through buildings. Since he’s a captain-class Shinigami, it’s assumed that he’s an excellent swordsman with both shikai (the first release of a zanpakutou or soul cutting sword) and bankai (the second release of a zanpakuto). His shikai and bankai have not yet been released, but he is shown using a Getsuga Tenshou (http://bleach.wikia.com/wiki/Isshin#cite_ref-80 ) during the battle with Aizen. As well, he appears to be an expert at Flash steps/Shunpo, able to keep extremely fast enemies on their toes in battle.
Prose sample: Isshin tested the rope one last time, placing all his weight onto it. There. That was going to be perfect! It’d hold him and… he peered over the edge of the roof. And it looked like it would be just the right length, too.
He dropped the rope and knelt down by the small collection of photographs and blueprints he held, studying them all one last time, plotting out his trajectory once again. If his calculations were correct (and with the level of experience the eldest Kurosaki had in this sort of thing, he was quite sure that they were) then he wouldn’t have any trouble.
Even the wind couldn’t keep him from accomplishing his goal! It might mess things up a little, but if it came right down to it, Isshin had shunpo on his side. It would make this activity a little less fun, of course, but desperate times called for desperate measures! Fortunately, it didn’t seem like any of those desperate measures would be necessary. Of course, Isshin couldn’t just leave it at that. He stuck his index finger into his mouth and sucked for a second, then pulled it out with a ‘pop!’ sound. Yep. Just like before, the wind was hardly even present.
Isshin took it as a good sign; a sign that his plan was approved by the very forces of nature! There wasn’t a single cloud in the sky, the wind was kindly staying out of his way, and it was a nice warm morning, just perfect for what he had in mind. Isshin pushed all of the photos and papers together, then tucked them into his uniform, sandwiched safely between his outer kosode and his inner kimono. Who knew when he’d need them again? He sure didn’t!
He marched over to where he’d dropped the rope and picked up the frayed end, giving it one last tug. Safety checks were all a go! Isshin stepped onto the ledge of the roof, looking down at the winding snake of pavement that lie patiently waiting for the ex-captain to make one wrong move and end up as nothing more than a manly, sexy pancake on the hard concrete.
He laughed at the very idea that he could possibly fail in this endeavor. Kurosaki Isshin, fall to his death? Ha ha ha! There was no way. He let out a final guffaw, then leapt off of the rooftop, holding onto the rope. When he was halfway down the building the rope pulled taut, bringing Isshin to a jerky, shoulder wrenching halt. But that didn’t stop the determined daddy, oh no! He threw his body weight hard to the right and then to the left, careening almost uncontrollably toward the shimmering glass windows of the Mirage hotel. Third from the right…
Time to get into attack position! Isshin shifted, letting go of the rope and letting his built-up momentum carry him, feet-first into the window. It shattered into billions of pieces, hardly slowing down the daddy-missile as he torpedoed right at his sleeping son’s head.
“GOOOOOOOOD MORNING ICHIGOOOOOOOOO!” He howled, at the top of his lungs.
